The origins of the Car Coat are in its name: it was originally long, designed to keep motorists warm in early automobiles that were open to the elements. Over time, the term became synonymous with a shorter coat, one designed to hit above the knee. Ours goes a little shorter still, falling just below the waist — and now it’s back for the season in an Italian wool-and-alpaca blend. Design details include a clean, hidden placket, two welt-style hand pockets and a single vent in the back. It’s an easy, chic layering piece: start with a base layer, add a shirt, and move up to a sweater as the temps continue to dip.
